Farewell to a hero

HUNDREDS of mourners gathered in Paisley to bid farewell to hero Paul McGee as he was laid to rest on Armistice Day with a colourful military send-off. Guardsman Paul died in Paisleys Royal Alexandra Hospital following an incident in his home village of Lochwinnoch in the early hours of Sunday, October 25.

Thousands of people weaved their way into Paisley town centre to enjoy the Sma' Shot Day celebrations. There was a new look for the annual Sma Shot Day events this year and this brought a splash of colour to Paisley as the town was filled with music and fun. Organisers were delighted with the turnout for the traditional workers festival that dates back to Victorian times.

'Cat killer' court protest

Animal rights campaigners held a demonstration outside Paisley Sheriff Court as 'cat killer' Anthony John Docherty, 23, appeared for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to killing three cats. Sheriff Neil Douglas deferred sentence for three weeks for psychiatric reports and continued Docherty's bail. He was escorted to a waiting vehicle by police amid jeers from protesters. PDE reporter Gavin McInally spoke to John Patrick from Scotland For Animals outside the court.

Barrhead plant blaze

Firefighters spent 18 hours tackling a massive blaze at a recycling plant in Barrhead. Hundreds of tons of waste material was destoryed and one officer was hurt in the fire in the building at Shanks Industrial Estate off Blackbyres Road.
