MARYHILL.....................................1 ARTHURLIE...................................2
ON-FORM Arthurlie had their work cut out for them on a playing surface that was really not fit for football at this level.
In a bad-tempered match that saw a Maryhill player losing a tooth in a crunching challenge and a red card for Arthurlie’s Dave Williams, the Barrhead side moved up to second in the league – just one point behind leaders Auchinleck Talbot.
Maryhill were by far the more comfortable team in the first half and took an early lead through Alex Smith’s strike. James Evans pulled off a wonder save to prevent the home side from doubling their lead before a goal right on the half time whistle hauled Arthurlie level.
Superb work on the left flank was followed by a pinpoint low cross from Alan McFadden which was met by Joe Andrew who cleverly guided the ball beyond Montgomery in the Maryhill goal.
The second half was more pleasing for Arthurlie manager Gary Faulds as his side coped better with the ankle-high grass. But all their efforts were dealt a serious blow when left back Dave Williams was shown a straight red card for a robust, but fair challenge on Maryhill’s Thomson.
But rather than feel sorry for themselves, Arthurlie pulled together and came up with a deserved winner on 76 minutes.
An Andy McFarlane free kick found substitute John Bradford at the back post and his header rocketed past the helpless keeper.
