Hockey ace Emily Maguire on target for Great Britain in London Cup

FORMER Kelburne star Emily Maguire scored the first international goal of her Great Britain career as the team signed off their Investec London Cup campaign with a win.

The Brits claimed fifth spot overall in the competition, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Ireland in their final competitive fixture before the Olympic Games.

Hannah Macleod scored twice in the first half before Maguire, who now plays for Reading, added a third from a penalty corner in the second half to complete the scoring.

However, despite finishing the tournament with a win, Great Britain head coach Danny Kerry was far from pleased with the performance.

He said: “To be frank, I’m disappointed. Our skill execution was poor and we really should have put them to the sword.

“Yes, we were missing a few influential players but it should have been a cricket score.

“We were sloppy in our execution at the end of the first half and it just wasn’t up to the required standard.”

Great Britain now has a recovery week before returning to training for the final run-in to the Olympics.

The squad’s training programme will continue until the 16 athletes selected for the Games enter the Olympic village in the third week of July.
