BRAEHEAD CLAN 5 DUNDEE STARS 4
BRAEHEAD Clan brought the curtain down on 2011 with a close-fought derby success over Dundee.
In an end-to-end encounter that could have gone either way, it was the Clan who came out on top by the odd goal in nine.
And the result keeps Braehead in sixth place in the Elite League standings, nine points behind Coventry Blaze, who have played SIX more games than Drew Bannister’s men.
But Clan had to fight back from an early set-back as two goals in less than a minute had given the visitors the lead with Lee Mitchell getting the first after 13 minutes at the Braehead Arena.
Then Jarrett Konkle added the second just moments later, confirming the Stars’ 300th all-time Elite League competitive goal.
As the buzzer went for the end of the period, there was no further scoring.
The Clan, though, were not to be subdued and pulled a goal back as Brock McPherson scored after 24 minutes.
And, two minutes later, the game was all square as Jade Galbraith was on hand to net with a powerplay goal.
Neither team, though, could get the go-ahead goal before the end of the period and the teams went in tied at two apiece.
Both teams traded goals in the first eight minutes of the third period, Jim Jorgenson putting the home team in front for the first time in the game with a powerplay strike at 45 minutes.
However, the Stars levelled it once again on 49 minutes with a strike from Alan Mazur.
Two further powerplay goals from Ryan Campbell at 55 minutes and then Jorgenson with his second goal of the game 90 seconds later opened up a two-goal lead for the home side, however.
There was another goal still in the game and it came the way of the Stars with three minutes remaining as Gary Wishart set up a tense finale.
Despite the Clan taking a penalty and the Stars pulling their goaltender Chris Whitley in the last minute for a 6-on-4 situation, they could not get the goal that would have taken the game into overtime.
