Bowling: They've got that winning feeling

JOHNSTONE emerged as victors in the Club Knockout final in a thrilling encounter with holders Victoria at Woodlands Bowling Club, which was ultimately decided on ends after a 35-35 tie.

The challengers to the Vics’ crown took control of the first and second games as they established a 21-15 lead.

Then Victoria hoisted themselves right back into the game as they halved Johnstone’s six-shot advantage in the third game.

But it was going to take an almighty effort for the holders to make up those three shots to keep their hands on the trophy in the fourth and final game.

However, the Vics took control after six ends and had not only overturned the deficit but established a three-point lead.

Johnstone fought back in the seventh end and pulled two shots back but at the eighth end Victoria had the three shots they needed going into the final game.

But with the score standing at a nerve-jangling 35-34 to the Vics in the last end, Johnstone levelled and took the trophy on ends won.

Bob Meiklejohn, secretary of the SSRIBA, praised both sets of players for putting on a thoroughly entertaining display.

He said: “I could not pick a man of the match as every player gave his all and did their clubs proud.

“I have been with the Association 27 years and I have witnessed many a good final over the years but this game was right up there with the best of them.

“There were quite a few bowls played straight from the top drawer.

“There was also a very good turnout and both teams did the Short Carpet game proud.”

Victoria president Gerry Moncrieff congratulated Johnstone on their success – and said they had been the better team overall.
