Team were all standouts says Gus

BUDDIES boss Gus MacPherson last night praised his players for overcoming their dodgy run of SPL results on Tuesday night as they booked a dream date at Hampden.

St Mirren were under pressure going into the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final clash with Hearts after suffering league defeats at the hands of the Jambos, Motherwell, Rangers and Hibs in quick succession.

But the Paisley players bounced back in the best possible fashion at Fir Park by booking their place in a major cup final.

MacPherson told Express Sports: They stepped up to the plate because there were a few questions being asked of them over the last couple of weeks.

I think they answered these questions with the manner of their performance.

They were a credit to themselves.

MacPherson is pleased to see hitman Billy Mehmet grabbing some well-deserved attention following his stunning strike at Fir Park in midweek, which was enough to secure a 1-0 win against the Tynecastle team.

However, the Saints gaffer also reckons that each and every one of the players who wore the black and white stripes on Tuesday night is worthy of praise.

MacPherson, who pulled off a tactical masterstroke at Fir Park by going with three centre-halves to nullify the threat posed by Hearts, said: Everybody will be talking about Billys goal and it was certainly good enough to win any game but every single one of the players played their part.

Its a fantastic achievement to get to the Co-operative Insurance Cup Final and our players have earned the right to be there.

Im delighted for them.
