Lennon news so sad, say Saints bosses

ST MIRREN chiefs have paid tribute to Paisley footballer Gordon Lennon after he was killed in a tragic off-road accident.

Gordon, right, of Linside Avenue, Paisley, was on a family trip to Brahan, near Dingwall, with his partner Kelly and their five-month-old son Kai at the weekend when tragedy struck.

The 26-year-old defender, who was captain of Third Division champions Dumbarton, died after the car he was driving hit an electricity pole.

Gordon had played against the Buddies for Dumbarton in last season’s Co-operative Insurance Cup and the Paisley club has issued a message of support to his devastated family and friends.

A spokesperson said: “All at St Mirren Park were saddened to learn of the death of Dumbarton FC captain Gordon Lennon in a tragic accident at the weekend.

“Dumbarton have been regular pre-season opponents for St Mirren in recent years and the sides of course also met in last season’s Co-operative Insurance Cup.

“We would like to pass on our condolences to Mr Lennon’s family and friends and to all at Dumbarton FC for their sad loss.”

It was originally thought that Gordon, who also had spells at Albion Rovers, Partick Thistle and Stenhousemuir, had died as a result of injuries suffered from the initial collision with the electricity pole.

However, it has now been reported that the former Paisley University student, who completed a degree in Business Analysis and Entrepreneurship two years ago, survived the initial impact but died after touching fallen power lines after he climbed out of the vehicle.
