Gus: Beating Brechin is our priority

SAINTS boss Gus MacPherson yesterday insisted he’s not looking too far into this season’s Homecoming Scottish Cup campaign.

MacPherson’s side were paired with either Inverurie Locos or Motherwell away from home after the fifth round draw was made yesterday afternoon at Easter Road.

But the Buddies must beat Brechin City at Glebe Park tomorrow night if they are to set up a fifth round clash with the Highland outfit or the Steelmen on Saturday, February 7.

Saturday’s fourth round clash with Jim Duffy’s side was postponed after the pitch at Glebe Park failed a 10.30am pitch inspection.

And MacPherson, pictured, revealed that he’s not going to contemplate a fifth round berth as Tuesday’s rescheduled game with Brechin is his top priority.

He said: “The priority is to get through this round first and foremost.

“We have a very tough game with Brechin City to play on Tuesday night.

“That’s the only thing we’re looking at just now.”

Making the draw yesterday was SFA president George Peat, MSP Kenny McAskill and Hibs legend Pat Stanton.

Even if Saints do make it into the fifth round, MacPherson’s side will have to wait before they find out who their next Scottish Cup opponents will be.

The game between Inverurie and Motherwell was also called off on Saturday and the rescheduled tie at Harlaw Park will not take place until Wednesday, January 21.

Meanwhile, MacPherson reckoned it was an easy decision to call Saturday’s game at Glebe Park off.

He said: “The referee called it off and it was the right thing to do, an easy decision.

“We’ll train on Monday and just prepare for Tuesday’s rescheduled game.”
