Saints lose out in five-goal thriller

A BRAVE effort by St Mirren’s second string to overcome Hibernian yesterday ended in disappointment as they suffered a 3-2 defeat.

Fans who went along to Love Street for the SPL Reserve League clash were treated to a five-goal thriller.

But the Buddies were left to rue missed chances as they were edged out by the Edinburgh outfit.

Turning out for Saints were first team stars Scott Cuthbert, Dennis Wyness and Jim Hamilton, while assistant manager Andy Millen was also in action.

They lined up alongside a sprinkling of players from the Under-19 side, including Kyle Faulds, Ben Carson and Sean Burns, while first team fringe player Marc McAusland was also involved.

The first half remained goalless, with striker Hamilton coming closest for the home side with an effort that struck the crossbar.

But Hibs punished Saints after the interval when Ross Campbell put the visitors in front.

Minutes later, Hamilton hauled the Buddies level as he buried a penalty kick.

Steve Pinau edged the Easter Road men back in front before St Mirren equalised for a second time.

On this occasion, midfielder Stephen McGinn struck after 77 minutes.

But, with nine minutes to go, Hibs got what proved to be the winner when Pinau netted his second of the afternoon.

Yesterday’s result means the visitors leapfrog Saints into third position in the table.

St Mirren’s next scheduled outing in the SPL Reserve League is against Hearts at Love Street, with a date and kick-off time to be confirmed in due course.
