ST MIRREN supersub Stephen McGinn has been hogging the headlines this week.
Since his stunning strike against Rangers on Sunday secured an historic 1-0 win for Saints, young McGinn has been the talk of Paisley – and just about every other football town in Scotland.
Now fans on Buddie Banter want to go one better– and give the boy a knighthood!
One of our regular contributors ‘Sensualsaint’ wrote in to say: “Congratulations wee man. You made my day, my week, my year and have contributed significantly to the wellbeing of my life.
“If McGinn is not given a knighthood in the New Year Honours List or at least a MBE for services to football, then there’s going to be an outcry and I’ll be leading the rebellion.
“What Stephen McGinn has done is history in the making.
“We’ve not beaten Rangers in the league at home for more than 20 years and I think that’s definitely worthy of some kind of recognition.
“He’s only about 19 or 20 but, no matter what happens to him now, he’ll forever be a Saints legend.”
Sheila Connolly, of Paisley, wholeheartedly agrees.
She said: “I thought my heart was going to explode at the final whistle on Sunday as I never thought in my wildest dreams that we could beat one of the Old Firm teams at home.
“And the fact it was our last-ever home league game with Rangers before we move to the new stadium made it all the more special.
“Stephen McGinn’s goal will live on in my memory forever. I’ll take it to my grave.
“Thanks for all the memories Stephen. You’re already a living legend.”
‘TonyD87’, someone who is new to Buddie Banter, e-mailed to say: “I wasn’t at the game. I watched it on Setanta because, well, I was a big fearty and I thought Saints would get gubbed.
“I’ll never make that mistake again and I just wish I had been there to see McGinn’s goal from the North Bank.
“Isn’t it great to see one of our youth development players come through and make a name for himself? It bodes really well for the future.
“The future’s bright, it’s black and white.”
McGinn’s scoring exploits didn’t go unnoticed by some exiled Buddies either.
Dennis Dixon, of Seedhill, Paisley, said: “My brother lives in Cyprus and, after the game, he was on the phone to me asking who Stephen McGinn was.
“I just told him he’s our secret weapon when we play the Old Firm because the boy’s got the measure of them and they both run scared when he plays against them.
“But, seriously, with an attacking midfielder like him, along with Andy Dorman and Garry Brady, in the side, I expect us to be climbing high in the SPL before long.”
Meanwhile, regular Buddie Banter man ‘Biggary87’ brought us all back down to earth with a stinging observation.
He said: “Another weekend goes by and the fans of the Old Firm are singing their sectarian bile again.
“How many times was the Sash sung at Love Street on Sunday?
“I counted four, so let’s start doing something about it instead of pussyfooting around the issue.
“Let’s start taking points off clubs who sing sectarian songs.”
