Ex-Buddie Iwelumo in Scotland squad

FORMER St Mirren striker Chris Iwelumo is in line for his first Scotland cap after being named in the squad to face Norway in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Hampden on October 11.

Scotland boss George Burley called 30-year-old Iwelumo into the squad after an impressive start to the season with his current club Wolves, in which he has scored eight goals in seven matches.

The big hitman’s Love Street career lasted from August 1996 until May 1998 and he scored on his Saints debut in a 5-0 thrashing of Dumbarton.

But it is in English football that he has made the biggest impact.

Iwelumo netted a hat-trick in his last appearance for Championship leaders Wolves but was also sent off, earning himself a three-match ban.

Meanwhile, the St Mirren Under-19s will be back in action today.

The young Buddies travel to New Brandon Park, home of Bellshill Juniors, to play Motherwell.

Saints go into today’s rescheduled fixture – which kicks off at 1pm – on the back of a very disappointing 4-0 defeat to Falkirk six days ago.
