Dargo: I can’t wait to give Gers the blues

ST MIRREN hitman Craig Dargo is aiming to repeat his goalscoring exploits against Rangers this weekend after stunning the Old Firm giants in his last tussle with them.

Dargo hasn’t faced the ’Gers since March 2007, when he was on target for former club Inverness Caley Thistle in a surprise 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

Since then, injury has prevented the striker from turning out against Rangers – but he’s hoping to bring that 19-month wait to an end by lining up for the Buddies in Sunday’s SPL showdown at Love Street.

And 30-year-old Dargo admits he would love to make up for lost time by leaving the Ibrox men feeling blue once again.

He said: “I’m hoping to be involved in Sunday’s game as I’ve got a decent record against Rangers.

“I haven’t played against them for some time but I have good memories of previous encounters.

“Nobody is going to give us a chance of getting a result against Rangers but we are quietly confident that, if we can play well enough, then we can get something.

“As a striker, you must have confidence and that’s something I have. Rangers will know we have players all over the park who can score goals, including myself and the likes of Billy Mehmet, Andy Dorman and Garry Brady.

“Rangers will also know that Love Street is a dangerous place to visit and, if we can play the way we know we can, then we’re capable of pulling off a shock.”

Dargo’s last outing for St Mirren’s first team was against Falkirk in a 1-1 draw at Love Street last month.

Since then, he’s been honing his fitness by playing for the reserves and was on target for the second string when they beat Inverness 2-1 on Tuesday.

Dargo said: “It’s always good to hit the back of the net and that’s what I’m hoping to continue doing.

“It’ll be a hard game against Rangers this weekend but, if we can keep it tight at the back, then that could frustrate them a little bit and cause them some problems.

“Although Rangers are flying at the minute, they only managed to narrowly beat Partick Thistle in the League Cup and their game against Hibs last weekend could have went either way at one stage.

“If we create chances against them, we have to take them.”

Meanwhile, St Mirren’s SPL game away to Aberdeen next month has been brought forward by 24 hours.

The match was due to be staged at Pittodrie on Wednesday, November 12, but will now be played on Tuesday, November 11, instead.

The kick-off will be at 7.45pm.
