Gaffer takes some positives from defeat

ST Mirren manager Gus MacPherson admitted he got the reaction he was looking for from his players at Fir Park.

Although disappointed at losing the game 2-1, the Saints boss reckoned his team’s display in Lanarkshire was a far improved one from the performance he got in the CIS Cup at East End Park four days earlier.

MacPherson said: “The most important thing is that we got a reaction out of the players from the disappointment of Tuesday night. We quite clearly got that reaction.

“I think the manner in which we played in the first half was extremely pleasing because we created plenty of chances and the only disappointment was that we didn’t go in at half time even further ahead.

“At half time the message was ‘same again’ and to try and be as positive as we were in the first half, but when we conceded a goal as early as we did it gave Motherwell a lift to go and put us under pressure.”
