The last 12 months have been hectic for members and instructors at McLachlan’s Martial Arts – and 2013 looks set to be even busier.
Last year, the academy, based in Macdowall Street, Paisley, gained a valued sponsor in JF Hillebrand.
And subsequently the squad went on to enjoy success at several events, including the WKA Open, Kickback MA Open and several other fight nights and events throughout the year.
All MMA students, without exception, successfully graded and moved up a level, while the academy also hosted seminars in boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay-Thai and even breakdancing.
Former world champion Gary Murray was on hand to pass on his experience and expertise during one of the many seminars.
Chief instructor at the Academy Matt McLachlan (4th Dan) also had several challenges throughout the year, including full contact fights and endurance events.
McLachlan also met up and trained with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie.
But Matt shows no signs of slowing down this year as he is already planning to sit his 5th Dan grading in Korean Kickboxing, undertake Karate and Hapkido disciplines and tackle several gruelling endurance events to raise money for local charities.
He told Express Sports: “I am very pleased with the progress we have made last year, but I am even more excited about this year.
“We have recently extended the academy to include more mat space, changing cubicles and a training room.
“We already have seminars booked in Muay-Thai, Hapkido and for the next quarter, Krav-maga and several others.
“Our students are already training hard for tournaments, fight nights, gradings and other challenges ahead, so it’s all guns blazing.”
The ‘Lil Dragons’ programme for four to seven year-olds is as popular as ever, with the youngsters learning fun drills and games, as well as learning useful anti-bullying skills, stranger danger skills and more.
The academy caters for all ages and abilities, and arts available include Lil Dragons, Korean Kickboxing, Tae Kwon-Do, Thai-boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – as well as private lessons and personal training
