Danny Lennon is hoping to wrap up a St Mirren return for talented defender Paul Dummett within the next seven days.
The Newcastle United full-back left Paisley earlier this month after his loan deal at Saints expired.
And the 21-year-old went on to make his first team debut for the Magpies in their recent FA Cup game at Brighton and Hove Albion.
Lennon wants to strike a deal with Newcastle United for another loan deal that would see Dummett return to Paisley until the end of the season.
But any such deal would have to be completed before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.
Lennon remains optimistic that a deal can be agreed.
He explained: “I don’t think we’ll have him back this weekend, so we’ll be looking for clarity on that one next week.
“The good thing for us is that Paul can only play for St Mirren Football Club or Newcastle United, not anyone else.
“But in our opinion, another six months at our football club will do his development the world of good.
“Paul was here for six months and made his debut for Newcastle immediately after returning.
“We’re still hopeful of him coming back for the rest of the season.
“I understand that Alan Pardew is trying to sign a left-back, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
