Douglas takes charge

PAISLEY politician Douglas Alexander has been handed the job of keeping new Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Number 10.

Mr Alexander has been put in charge of the Labour Party’s next general election campaign – a role the former Chancellor has filled in the past.

But now his young protege has been asked to step in after Mr Brown collected the keys to his new Downing Street residence this morning.

Mr Brown has until 2010 before he must give the green light for a general election and Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Mr Alexander said he will be ready to get the campaign moving whenever the time comes.

He added: "I was delighted to accept Gordon’s offer of co-ordinating Labour’s general election campaign."

"My task, working with others, is to ensure we are ready whenever the new Prime Minister decides to go to the country."
