Jobs axe falls on Shieldhall

A NUMBER of workers from Renfrewshire will be affected by yesterday’s announcement that drinks giant Diageo is to axe 900 jobs.

Around 30 workers at the company’s Shieldhall bottling plant, which is next to Braehead retail park in Renfrew, will be made redundant.

Diageo has also announced a £3million investment at the Shieldhall site, where more than 500 people are employed.

Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Jim Sheridan gave a “cautious welcome” to the financial investment but also sought assurances from bosses that any redundancies would be voluntary.

He added: “Shieldhall has came away from the review fairing much better than other Diageo sites in Scotland, with an investment of £3million.

“However, the news that the restructuring will result in 30 job losses is worrying.”

Most of the jobs being axed will be lost in Kilmarnock and Port Dundas.
