WORKERS at a leading travel company are on cloud nine after being honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Scotland’s largest travel group, Barrhead Travel, won the ‘Best Employer’ gong at the Scottish Business Awards.
The company, which employs over 550 staff across Scotland and Northern Ireland, fought off stiff competition from many rival firms.
Also in the running were Everything Everywhere (Orange and T Mobile), Pertemps, Optima Solutions, Servtech, Motherwell Bridge and Dron Dickson.
Sharon Munro, chief executive at Barrhead Travel, insisted everyone at the company had played a huge part in this latest success.
She told the Paisley Daily Express: “We are absolutely over the moon to have won the Best Employer category at such a great event.
“The Scottish Business Awards dinner is one of the most prestigious events in the corporate calendar and to be recognised as the country’s top employer is a real honour.
“Barrhead Travel has enjoyed a strong period of growth in recent years, owing in no small part to the enthusiasm and dedication of our staff, trainers and managers.
“As a company, we place great emphasis on staff development and the creation of a positive working environment.
“It’s simply fantastic to have our hard work recognised at a national level.”
Hosted by television presenter Angus Deayton, the ceremony – held at Edinburgh’s International Conference Centre – was attended by some of the country’s leading business figures, including Sir Tom Hunter, Sir Ian Wood and Sir Arnold Clark.
Sir Bob Geldof, a former member of the Boomtown Rats and organiser of the Live Aid fundraising drive, was guest speaker.
Barrhead Travel has enjoyed a period of high growth in recent years, with turnover increasing 30 per cent between 2011 and 2012, despite the ongoing difficult market conditions.
The company recently launched a nationwide youth development initiative to complement an ongoing drive to recruit experienced staff and support future business expansion.
Barrhead Travel was founded in 1975 by ex-bank worker Bill Munro and initially operated with just four staff.
Now, 37 years later, the company has mushroomed into a multi-faceted travel giant with over 550 staff in 34 stores – and is one of the largest and most successful travel agencies in the UK.
The company has won many awards over the years, including the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Best Business crown, Top UK Travel Agency and Best Travel Agency in Scotland for 11 years running.
