Hundreds are taking a dip thanks to cut-price swims
CUT-PRICE swimming is making a real splash across Renfrewshire as families return to the pool in droves.
Hundreds more mums, dads and kids are diving right in at four local pools after Renfrewshire Leisure cut the price of a family swim.
Last October, Renfrewshire Leisure, the management trust that runs sports and leisure centres, introduced a new family ticket on a Saturday from noon until closing time that gets two adults and two children entry for just £3 instead of £9.
The £6 saving has been a hit, with a staggering 2,850 per cent rise in families using swimming pools in Johnstone, Elderslie, Renfrew and Erskine
Between October 2010 and January last year only 32 family swims were recorded, but since the promotion to encourage more people to go swimming was launched, 912 family swims have been recorded at the pools over the same period.
The biggest rise has been at Erskine Swimming Pool, which saw an increase of 3,440 per cent. Since the promotion started, 688 family tickets have been bought, compared with 20 for the same period in the previous year.
The Hope family, from Johnstone, has taken advantage of the swim promotion and dad Graeme said: “It’s a fantastic idea. It will get families to go swimming more often.
“It also gets youngsters used to the water and promotes the idea of being active.”
Renfrewshire Leisure chief executive Joyce McKellar said the deal was started as part of the UK Big Splash campaign that encourages families to take a dip or do a few lengths.
She explained: “We never thought it would be so popular. The increase in families using our pools is astonishing.
“It shows that if the promotion is right, people will buy into it. Although we have dropped the price of a family swim on a Saturday afternoon, we are bringing in more income because so many families are buying the new tickets.
“This was planned to be a six-month promotion until the end of March, after which we will review the position.”
