A RECENT spate of home fires involving portable heaters has forced Strathclyde Fire and Rescue to issue a warning.
Buddies are being urged not to leave heaters on or unattended in their homes.
If it is really cold, use a heater controlled by a thermostat on low power overnight.
And don’t dry clothes on or near devices, including electric bar-type or portable gas heaters.
Buddies are also being urged to ensure furniture and other flammable items are kept well clear – at least three feet from the heaters.
The public has also been warned that it is imperative that gas heaters are serviced by a qualified engineer at least once a year.
And don’t trail heater flexes where someone could trip over them.
Finally, Buddies are being advised that as these types of heaters need lots of power – plug them straight into a wall socket, not into an adaptor or power strip.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said: “The public is being asked to be vigilant not only for themselves but also on behalf of neighbours, particularly if they are older, live alone or have mobility or other health issues.
