Brave shopkeeper tackles crossbow raiders
A BRAVE shopkeeper was hailed as a hero yesterday after he took on robbers who were armed with a knife and a lethal crossbow – and sent them packing.
Javid Ali was horrified when the masked men burst into his Paisley store and demanded cash.
But the gutsy 45-year-old dad refused to give up his takings and, instead, picked up a metal rod and decided to fight back.
Javid started hitting one of the thugs across the back and when the other yob – who was armed with a six-inch blade – tried to lift the till from the shop counter, he lashed out at him too.
After a struggle, the stunned robbers ran out of the store empty-handed.
Last night, Javid told the Paisley Daily Express: “It was a frightening experience but I was determined that these thieves weren’t getting any money from me.”
The robbery bid took place at the popular Sunshine licensed grocer’s shop in Green Road, Paisley.
Dad-of-three Javid was about to close the family business for the night when two men who were wearing balaclavas walked in.
One was armed with a crossbow and the other was carrying a deadly kitchen knife.
Javid said: “One of the men tried to get behind the counter and it was at that point I knew I had to do something.
“The nearest thing to me was a metal rod, so I picked that up and started hitting him with it.”
As that raider backed off, his accomplice tried to grab the till but was stopped in his tracks by Javid.
“I must have hit out at the robbers about eight or nine times,” he said. “They were wearing balaclavas over their heads but I reckon they were young men, probably in their late teens.
“They left the shop with nothing but I certainly wouldn’t want to go through that again.”
Customers at Javid’s store have praised him for his brave actions.
One woman said: “The thieves were armed and could easily have injured Javid. He could even have been killed, so he was very brave to tackle them in the way he did.
“I reckon he should get a medal. Hopefully, these thieves will think twice about trying to raid another shop.”
Police have been looking at CCTV footage of the robbery bid in the hope they recognise either of the crooks.
In an appeal for witnesses, a police spokesman said: “We want to hear from anyone who spotted two young men loitering outside that shop in Green Road.
“Someone might have seen a couple of men rushing out of the store and, if that is the case, they should contact us immediately.
“Whatever information you might have, ring Paisley Police Office on 0141 532 5900 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
