A PERVERT who repeatedly abused a schoolgirl at a house in Paisley has been jailed for three and a half years.
And a sheriff has decided that twisted Robert Muir is such a danger to the public that he also handed the fiend a further 30-month suspended sentence.
This means the middle-aged pervert will be locked up again if he re-offends after being released from prison.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard that Muir first targeted his victim when she was just 14.
The abuse started on New Year’s Day in 2002 and continued until September 2003.
During that time, 46-year-old Muir committed several acts of indecency against the girl at a house in the Hawkhead area of Paisley.
He induced the youngster to commit sex acts with him and expose herself to him.
Muir denied any wrongdoing but, after a trial, a jury found him guilty of using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour against the schoolgirl.
Yesterday, when Muir appeared in court for sentencing, Sheriff Neil Douglas was told the accused continues to protest his innocence.
The court also heard that social workers believe there is a high risk of Muir re-offending.
Sheriff Douglas told Muir: “The sentence of the court has to be long enough to be considered adequate punishment and reflect the public disgust at conduct of this kind.
“It must also provide, in particular, some deterrent against other abuses of trust being committed.
“You continue to deny this charge, which puts you at a high risk of re-offending. I consider it appropriate to protect the public from people like you and sentence you to an extended sentence in two parts.”
Muir’s defence lawyer claimed her client now lived a quiet life in Prestwick, where he cared for his elderly mother and enjoyed taking photographs.
She said he was concerned about what would happen to his mother if he was sent to prison as she is in her 70s and he is her main carer.
However, jailing Muir, Sheriff Douglas said he had a duty to protect members of the public.
Muir was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for an indefinite period of time and banned from working with children for life.
