A SERIAL sex attacker who terrorised Paisley faces being locked up for years after he was caught because his identical twin brother’s DNA was stored on a police database.
Martial arts expert Kevan McDonald, 33, carried out a string of horrific sex attacks in Paisley and surrounding towns.
The evil brute raped a schoolgirl and a 33-year-old woman, leaving his victims badly traumatised.
McDonald, of Barterholm Road, Paisley, also attacked two teenagers with intent to rape them in two separate incidents but was foiled on both occasions by passers-by who came to their rescue.
The attacks took place over a three-month period between April and June this year.
Yesterday, McDonald pleaded guilty to two rapes, as well as two charges of intent to rape and stealing items from his victims, when he apeared at the High Court in Glasgow.
In one horrific incident, the sex beast raped his victim at a cycle track before casually fixing the chain on her bike and kissing her on the cheek.
Prosecutor Kath Harper told the court: “The DNA profiles recovered in relation to the two rapes were found to match the profile of the accused’s identical twin brother.
“Police enquiries with the brother led to the accused attending at Paisley Police Office.”
The court was told that McDonald pounced on his first victim – a 17-year-old schoolgirl – as she walked through Paisley town centre at 1am on April 3 after a night out with friends.
McDonald pushed the girl into bushes in Forbes Place, removed her clothes and raped her.
Afterwards, as she sat crying, he callously told her: “Put your clothes back on. You’re too tense, you need to relax.”
McDonald, who practised martial arts for two hours a day, targeted his second victim – a 16-year-old girl – in Craigielea Road, Renfrew, on May 27 as she walked home at 1.30am.
He hid in bushes and grabbed her as she walked past before pushing her to the ground, putting his hands round her throat and dragging her to a wooded area.
The court was told the girl bravely lashed out at McDonald and a passing taxi driver went to her aid after hearing her scream.
McDonald’s third victim was an 18-year-old girl who was attacked at 1.20am on June 16 in a lane near to Cochrane Street, Paisley.
She also screamed for help and managed to call her mum on her mobile phone.
Ms Harper told the court: “The mother could only hear the screams of her daughter. Fortunately, the friends she had just left heard her screams and ran to help her and McDonald ran off.”
McDonald’s fourth victim was a 33-year-old Japanese woman who was targeted as she rode her bike along a cycle path between Newton Terrace and Main Road in Elderslie at 1pm on June 16.
She was attacked when she stopped to ask McDonald for directions.
Ms Harper said: “He punched her on the face and grabbed her by the throat and compressed her neck.
“As she began to lose consciousness, he removed her trousers and used them to tie her hands behind her back. He then raped her.
“She was extremely distressed and the accused dressed her again and then went into her rucksack and gave her a bottle of water, fixed the chain on her bike, which had come off, and kissed her on the side of the face before walking off.”
The court also heard that McDonald stole a mobile phone and an Ipod from his 16-year-old victim, as well as a camera and a phone from the 33-year-old woman. These items were recovered when his home was searched by police.
McDonald was examined by six psychiatrists, who found that he was fit to plead and was sane at the time of the offences.
Defence advocate Joe Barr said: “He has asked me to express to the court and his victims his extreme remorse for his actions. It was totally out of character.
“He accepts he has caused his victims terrible trauma. He has let his family down and has ruined his life. He is totally ashamed of his conduct.”
Judge Lord Turnbull ordered McDonald to be detained at the State Hospital on an interim compulsion order.
The judge will determine at a further hearing next year whether or not McDonald should be detained without limit of time.
The Crown has asked Lord Turnbull to consider imposing a lifelong restriction order on McDonald.
