Malawi thanks

ON a recent trip to Scotland I had the pleasure of spending time in Paisley talking to students, staff and poverty campaigners at the University of the West of Scotland about the difficulties facing midwives and nurses in Malawi.

The support by local people for the Oxfam Scotland and Unison ‘Public Health First’ campaign was very encouraging.

I was therefore delighted to hear of the recent announcement of your local MP and International Development Secretary, Douglas Alexander of an additional £9m of health funding for Malawi.

This money will make a real difference on the ground, save lives and help stop the unnecessary deaths of many women in childbirth and pregnancy.

Thank you to people in Paisley for their support.
